We packed our car full of Germans (as is the custom when heading to Hepburn for some Advanced Principles David Holmgren style) and set off, but not before taking a little detour to the airport to pick up a stranded Permaculture Pilgrimager (I told you it’s not a religion!!). Fashionably late as always we filled up on soup and set up tent in a dark paddock, my head nodded as I tried to cram in the last 10 pages of David’s book, 4 to go I succumbed to sleep.

The Advanced Principles course is well worth the trip, but as always my head was fairly bursting with knowledge at the end of the first day and I am still digesting it and working out how to apply it to life as I know it. Some people have all the luck, oh to have David Holmgren brains!

Whilst fascinating, the photographic opportunities at the primary school hall were not so scenic so I’ll leave you with some snaps from around David’s place at Melliodora. I won’t recommend the chook tractor tricycle as its inhabitants came to a sticky end at the paw of a Hepburn fox, but I promise if you visit Melliodora you will be dreaming of a tree house in ancient pear tree for years to come.

A LOOP AROUND THE GARDEN

We have finished our PDC course. The final task was to design a garden for a Permablitz in Coburg. It was really interesting doing a design for a real place. The client is time poor so our design centred around an “everyday loop” that they could walk in 5 minutes around the garden to harvest all the things that need to be collected everyday, including chicken eggs. Perennials and orchard trees are on meandering little stepping stone paths off the main loop. My favourite part is the arbor which will be abundant with pumpkins and zucchini in summer.

VEG OUT UNDER LUNA PARK

As part of our PDC course we visited the community garden Veg Out in St Kilda. It has quite a lovely history, it began as an abandoned bowling green, the building had been taken over by a group of artists who after a while felt sorry for the weed infested green and began nurturing it and then it sprawled and rambled out into one of the prettiest, creative community gardens I have seen. It was so loved by the community that the council couldn’t kick them out and now have grown to cherish it too. Dinosaurs made of trash metal stalk under the shadow of Luna Park and, there is a garden bed shaped as a ship complete with a mini sail, each plot has a letter box so when there are water restrictions everyone knows when they are allowed to water. It was a very inspiring place, every child at heart couldn’t help but melt.

THESIS IS OVER!

It’s been so long! I’m afraid thesis got in the way but now it’s over! Hooray! Now I have my degree in my hot little hand. Oh oh, the real world beckons.

Now because I have been so slack posting in my darling blog I’m going have to kick my ass into gear and attempt to post in this guy everyday for the rest of the week on second thought perhaps once a week is a little more realistic for a lazybones like me. 😉
